“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” hit movie theaters last Thursday, April 1, and is based on the game “Super Mario Galaxy.” It has more than just Mario characters, with the big one being Fox McCloud from “Star Fox”. There were also characters from “Super Mario Bros. 2” for the NES, like Wart (the final boss of the game).
I feel like the movie was alright; however, they attempted to use cameos from multiple different characters that fans love/haven’t seen in a while in official media to get them to go watch. For example, the characters from “Super Mario Bros. 2” weren’t used in the movie much and were sort of hyped up as if they were going to be in the movie more. According to other places, Rosalina didn’t have much screentime compared to other characters, though I couldn’t tell much while watching the movie. However, I do wish they had used Rosalina more than they did in the movie.
When watching the Nintendo Direct for the movie, I did not expect them to get Donald Glover as Yoshi, and when watching it, I thought they got the person who played Yoshi in the game. I liked some of the movie’s jokes, and I enjoyed the action, but I feel like there wasn’t as much of a focus on space compared to the original “Super Mario Galaxy”.
I find it funny that after it was announced that Donald Glover plays Yoshi, people found mashups between Mario songs that have to do with Yoshi and songs by Donald Glover (under the name Childish Gambino) and commented on the coincidence happened caused by the movie. There were also new combinations made, like “Ground Theme (Yoshi) – New Super Mario Bros. Wii”, which mashes up the advertised song (NSMBWii Ground Theme) with the drums of “Space Jam” by Quad City DJs and “Bonfire” by Childish Gambino/Donald Glover uploaded onto the MarioGunner (a channel similar to SiIvaGunner but with a Mario theme) on the day the movie was released.
I somewhat liked the movie, but I wish there were more to do with the game’s namesake. I rate the movie 3 out of 5 stars.
