EAST LYME, Conn- Last week, the Fitch Track and Field team traveled to East Lyme, where several runners placed highly, ultimately coming away as champions.
On May 20, Fitch athletes competed in the Division I and II ECC Championships. In both the boys’ and girls’ events, the Falcons placed in the top spots. The boys’ team finished fourth in the division, led by junior Jacob Smith, who contributed to 26 of Fitch’s total 84 points. The girls competed fiercely in the sprint events, where sophomore Valerie Codd continued her reign as ECC champion in the 100-meter sprint. The girls also earned first in the 4×100 relay. Despite the Falcons success, for the second year in a row, Woodstock Academy swept both girls and boys to capture the Division I title.
Many of the Falcons performed notably during the meet. For the boys, Smith set a personal best in the 110m and 300m hurdles and a season best in the high jump. Freshman Ben Gregor also scored points in the 110m hurdles, earning fifth place. In the long-distance events, senior Julien Silva stood out with a second-place finish in the 3200m at a time of 10.01, and a 4th place finish in the 1600m. Other top boys finishers included junior Alex Campos Dias, placing fourth in the 200m and third in the 400m, while also earning third place in the 4×100 relay with seniors Jeramiah Baig, Jayden Moscol, and Nick Donaldson. In field events, junior Devin Cook secured fourth in shot put, and James Logan placed second in pole vault.

In addition to repeating her win in the 100-meter sprint, Codd also placed first in the 4×100 relay, along with junior Akira Gregor, sophomore Alasia Moore, and freshman Leah Ragland. The girls also had top finishers in the 100 and 200m sprints, with Codd at fourth in the 200 and Gregor placing 4th and 3rd in the events. In field and long-distance events, freshman Mary Stafford put points on the board at sixth in the 1600m, and freshman Sophia Williams jumped 4 ‘6 in the high jump to earn fifth place.
For Codd, this was like any other meet.
“I always pack my bag the same way. I wear the same jersey. And I always order an iced shaken espresso from Starbucks before the meet.”
For some of the team, the meet marked an end to the season. For select players, they will compete in the CIAC State Meet on May 31.
