For as long as I can remember, the biggest Christmas debate has been whether “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie or not. Last year, I argued that it is, but now the question is whether or not its 1990 sequel, “Die Hard 2,” is also a Christmas movie. My answer to that is, definitely. Just because it is action and there is gore and fighting, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a Christmas movie.
In the film, John McClane (played by Bruce Willis) is waiting for his wife to come home for Christmas at Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. This takes place on Christmas Eve, which lines up with a majority of Christmas movies. But that’s not all; there is so much more evidence. Terrorists led by a rogue military officer do show up, and John McClane has to defeat them to save the day. This movie is an action movie, but since when were action movies not also allowed to be Christmas movies? There are so many action Christmas movies, such as “Red One,” “Krampus,” or “Violent Night.” People think holiday films are just comedies or light-hearted movies, but they are quick to discount other genres such as action and horror.
Another thing featured in “Die Hard 2” is several Christmasy quotes. For example: “Just once, I’d like a regular, normal Christmas!” and “Ah, what the hell, it’s Christmas!” The soundtrack also features a few Christmas songs throughout the movie, such as “Carol of the Bells” and “Let It Snow.” If a movie were not a Christmas movie, it would probably not have featured Christmas songs or even mentioned Christmas at all.
In conclusion, “Die Hard 2” is definitely a Christmas movie. There is just so much evidence that it is, and if it wasn’t a Christmas movie, they would have never set the sequel on the same day as the original film.
