GROTON, Conn. – On May. 20, Fitch High School’s music department will host its Spring “Pops” Concert, now with a trendy and nostalgic Y2K theme, performing classic songs from the 2000s.
The Fitch High School music department will soon be having the annual “Pops” concert. Many students and teachers are eager to perform in this concert. Multiple Choirs and Orchestras will perform in the concert, and the songs take you back to the past, with the given, Y2Kk theme. The concert will take place in the Fitch auditorium, like previous concerts. Multiple students are happy with the theme, which is music from the 2000s. This year, the choral director, Sandra Hall, chose the theme. Students consider the “Pops” concert to always be fun, and it is annually performed near the end of Spring. Hall explains how it’s a beautiful time to leave the year with carefree music and joyful smiles. Including that, it is also a good time to celebrate the seniors and upcoming graduates.
Some teachers have a comment about what the concert means to them.
“The pops concert is always a nice time for us to not only close out the year with some light-hearted music, but we also get to celebrate our senior choir members,” said Hall.
Considering the songs in the lineup, Hall has a difficult time deciding on which she prefers most.
“I can never pick a favorite song at any concert before it happens,” said Hall. “You never know what is going to be your favorite until it is done being performed.”
Rebekah Chamberlain, assistant choral teacher, shares Hall’s enthusiasm for the upcoming concert.
Technically speaking, the arrangements posed a number of challenges in doing justice to the songs.
“For many of the songs, we are relying on backing tracks because the piano cannot replicate the electronic instruments often found in pop recordings,” said Chamberlain. “A lot of the original feel is lost when it is translated to just a piano accompaniment. A few pieces are a capella, which allows the focus to be on the voice and not the electronic aspects of the music, while still remaining true to the character of the song.”
