UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Earlier this month, the Fitch Boys’ Basketball team secured its first ECC Division I Championship in more than two decades.
On March 2, the top-seeded Falcons traveled to the Mohegan Sun Arena to compete against Norwich Free Academy. Fitch entered the match with an impressive 19-3 record after defeating Killingly 67-56 in the semifinals. Both sides were persistent on the court, Fitch holding a halftime lead, but the Wildcats managed to narrow the gap to 46-43 by the start of the last quarter. Nevertheless, Fitch secured a double-digit lead in the final 90 seconds, with arduous effort. They were led by their first-year coach, Kareem Brown, finishing with a 67-58 victory.
Fitch had many notable players who contributed to the win. One analogous to this was senior Xavier Goode, who scored a game-high 22 points and was named ECC Most Valuable Player. Other key players included juniors Si’kis Reels and Cayden Simmons-Gaskin with 18 points and 12 points, respectively. Both also earned tournament honors.
On March 9, Fitch continued to the CIAC Division II Championships. Last year, the squad lost to Bunnell High School in Division III for a close final. The Falcons played in the second round of the tournament and were fourth-seeded against the No.13 Maloney Spartans. Both sides played a physical game, but Fitch was defeated 64-55 in overtime.
The Falcons concluded the season with a 20-3 record.
