GROTON, Conn. – Voters have approved a $14.4 million project that will completely renovate Fitch High School’s athletic complex. Here are the project details:
Although the renovations are not underway, the year-long construction phase is set to begin in February 2027, with an expected completion date of January 2028.
Currently, the football field consists of natural grass. With this renovation plan, Fitch students will be gaining a new synthetic, multi-purpose turf field. The current natural grass field is only suitable for football, forcing other high school and youth teams to travel off-campus for practices and games.
When I asked Falcon linebacker Luke Barry about the field, he said, “It will be nice to have a field that won’t get muddy,” said linebacker Luke Barry. “[Fitch is] one of the only schools with natural grass in the ECC, so it can get messy after rain.”
When the construction is complete, a wide range of sports, including soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey, will have a designated field to play their games.
“It’s exciting knowing that we won’t have to wait as late as 8:30 for a practice field,” said Zoe Moon, a sophomore field hockey player.
These new facilities will not only offer more consistent playing conditions, but they will also offer an advantage to us here at Fitch. The uniform surface of a synthetic field prevents issues with mud, uneven grass, or worn-down areas that occur on natural fields. This all allows for better and safer athletic practices on campus.
Falcon fans will be getting larger, renovated bleachers on the home side. There will also be new restrooms, ticket booths, and a press box. With the revamp, the Falcon athletic complex will be fully compliant with the ADA, enabling individuals with disabilities to enjoy the full fan experience without worrying about accessibility. All of these new facilities will be beneficial to the Fitch and Groton communities.
