GROTON, Conn. – After a delay due to weather, Fitch and Groton Middle School students will soon come together for a celebration of cultures through music.
On Feb. 26, Fitch High School and Groton Middle School were supposed to have the “Come Together” concert, but it was postponed because of the huge snowstorm and the snow days that came in the previous days. Multiple Choirs and Orchestras will perform in the concert, and the songs celebrate different cultures and diversity in society. In previous years, the “Come Together” concert was a celebration of music for Black History Month. This year, the music department chose songs that spread awareness to multiple cultures, ethnicities and conflicts of oppression in society. The concert was rescheduled, but there is no date confirmed for it at the moment.
Many students are eager to perform their favorite pieces.
“My favorite song is ‘Storm is Passing Over’ because of the harmonies,” said Avery Romanski, a student in Fitch’s Concert Choir. The song is a gospel hymn written by Charles Albert Tindley, who is an African American composer. The groups that will be performing in the concert include Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, GMS Advanced Choir, Honors Orchestra, and multiple student solos.
After the concert was postponed because of snow days, even teachers had concerns about when things would be rescheduled.
“When the Come Together Concert was postponed, I felt anxious about when it would be rescheduled,” said Rebekah Chamberlain, an assistant choir teacher at Fitch. “But I’m also grateful that the choirs would have extra time to polish up the music to make up for lost rehearsals.”
The postponement of the concert spread anxiousness through the music department, though it did open up time for more rehearsals. Students got a chance to practice the music and to be fully prepared for the upcoming concert.
As for other concerts in the meantime, Fitch’s “A Night with Sondheim” was not postponed. The event took place on March 5 in the school cafeteria and featured the Chamber Choir from Fitch High School. The students performed multiple songs, while the audience was welcome to eat food that was provided.
As for other future Fitch music events, the annual “Bandapalooza” concert will be held later this month. The event is the Groton District band festival. Multiple bands and groups from schools throughout the district will be performing pieces.
