Valve has announced that it is adding three new pieces of hardware to the lineup, so it’s more than just the Steam Deck. The three new pieces of hardware being released are the Steam Controller, the Steam Machine, and the Steam Frame.
First, the pre-existing Steam Deck. The Steam Deck is a console released in 2022. It runs SteamOS version 3, an operating system that is based on Arch Linux, which can run a lot of games on the Steam library. It has a trackpad on the right side, so it can play games that typically wouldn’t be able to be played on a console.
Steam Controller
The Steam Controller is essentially Valve’s Pro Controller, like how Nintendo has its Pro Controller. It has a trackpad like the Steam Deck does, and is possibly made with the Steam Deck in mind, as it has a Steam Button. The controller comes with this thing called “The Puck”, which is a wireless charger for the controller (it also has USB charging) and a wireless hub for the controller. The controller has a Gyro, which, when you turn your controller, turns whatever in-game is linked to gyro-controls. There are also back buttons that can be mapped to any other input. This works on a Steam Deck, PC, Mac, any other handheld device, phones, and the new Steam Machine.
Steam Machine
The Steam Machine is a hybrid of a console and a PC (mostly PC) that runs SteamOS. It is, as described by the announcement video, 6 times as powerful as their Steam Deck, which means it can run 4k resolution and 60 frames per second, something the Steam Deck can’t support natively on the built-in screen. The Steam Machine comes in at either 512 Gigabytes or 2 Terabytes (depending on which you want to get), with expandable storage through a microSD port on the front. The Steam Machine supports the use of not only the new Steam Controllers, but also PlayStation, Xbox controllers, and other third-party controllers.
Steam Frame
The Steam Frame is a Virtual Reality (VR) headset that allows you to play both your VR and non-VR Steam library. The Steam Frame is the successor to the Valve Index, which ran Windows and/or Linux instead of Steam’s own operating system. This, like the Steam Deck and Steam Machine, runs SteamOS. The controllers for the Steam Frame are made with both VR and non-VR gaming in mind, with buttons for both being on the controller. There are cameras and infrared LEDs for controller and headset tracking, and capacitive sensors for finger tracking (not full-on hand tracking). There’s something new called “Foveated Streaming”, which offers 10x the image quality depending on where you’re looking. This uses low-latency eyetracking and happens so quickly that you don’t even notice it.
All of the new hardware announced for 2026 with no exact release date announced.
