GROTON, Conn – On Nov. 12, Fitch High School held an expo night to showcase the school to 8th-graders who may attend Fitch next year.
Between 5 to 7:30 p.m., Fitch held an expo night in the flag hallway and the Media Center. Clubs and activities were in the Flag Hallway, and info on the department heads was in the Media Center. The department heads gave information on the electives and information on AP and IB courses. In the past, this information was given during open house night.
“We had quite a few events in the building on that evening for middle school-aged students, and Expo Night was scheduled right after those events,” said Ms. Amy McKenna. “I think the turnout was great, as so many families were already on the campus and were happy to stay and see what Fitch has to offer.”
With so many activities on display, it was difficult to pick a singular highlight.
“I would struggle to pick a single table or area, as there were so many pockets of Falcon spirit along the expo path,” said Ms. McKenna. “Department chairs and other teachers set out displays to showcase academics, clubs and sports lined all sides of the flag hallway with students and swag that represented them well, and all spots on the tour were meaningful and informative.”
There were also students at the expo helping to promote clubs and extracurricular activities.
“Many booths received a lot of action, including the debate team and Falcon Press,” said Xavier Eastin, a student who was helping out a club during the expo night. “It was good to see so many eighth graders take an interest.”
With everything from culinary classes to the environmental club, many students showed up to
“We were able to show that we have more opportunities than the middle school,” said Adriana Sirois, who represented multiple clubs. “Hopefully, that will get more participation in clubs next year.”
Others on hand agreed it was an excellent avenue to show both students and families the possibilities and programs available.
“I think the Expo Night was a great way to show the upcoming ninth graders what Fitch has to offer,” said Kendall Hartung, who was at Expo Night to represent the debate team.
Besides extracurricular activities, there were also sports tables for field hockey, track, soccer, lacrosse, football, softball, basketball, tennis, and swim. The department chairs were also present to explain the courses available for students to take to families.
Overall, most students and faculty felt the event was successful.
