WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Last week, 11 swimmers from the Fitch girls co-op team qualified for the CIAC class championship meet hosted at the Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford, and the performance that ensued would break the Fitch High School girls swim freestyle relay record.
The record was broken in the 200 freestyle relay, where the team earned a time of 1:38.97. This beat the previous record set in 2004, which was 1:40.49. The newest record-breaking relay team consisted of Ana Orphanides, Audrey Schrage, Jailyn Wheeler, and Addison Fulling.
The selected swimmers put in a hard earned result against some of the best high school swim teams in the state. Teams such as Greenwich, Glastonbury, Norwalk, and Staples, were in the highlights of this event.
The Fitch girls lost to an overpowering Greenwich team, who finished the event with more than 491 points ahead of second place Glastonbury. Greenwich High School ended up winning their 31st CIAC class LL swimming title while Fitch finished at fifth place, tied with Stonington and New London with 392 points.
At the time this article was written, Fitch had already played their final meet, which was a state open meet on Nov. 16, in which they placed 15th.
