Free Money for College: Tips on Applying for Scholarships

Free+Money+for+College%3A+Tips+on+Applying+for+Scholarships

Scholarships are very important for high school students who are planning on attending college. College can be very expensive and for a high school student that can be daunting, however if you apply to scholarships you can ease the burden and start focusing on your life at college.

As a Junior myself, I have started to look for scholarships and the first place I look is on College Board. Here at Fitch, this website is encouraged to be used by all students and therefore can be considered a trustworthy website to find scholarships. College Board has many scholarships available and you can apply filters in order to get scholarships you are eligible for.

However, that is not the only place to find scholarships. There are many different websites directed to helping students find scholarships. According to an article from Forbes, Some of the best websites to look for scholarships include: Bold.org, CareerOneStop (through the U.S dept of labor), Scholarships.com, and College Board amongst others.

When applying for scholarships, it’s important to have a basic essay written out, either about your future career or something you find important or interesting. This is because many scholarships ask for an essay, and when trying to quickly apply, it’s good to have one already done. Of course some scholarships will have different prompts so you can’t always rely on that one essay but it is certainly good to have. Also just remember that scholarships have deadlines so it is important to set reminders for when you need to submit them.

There are also two different types of scholarships; merit based scholarships and financial need scholarships. Along with that, not all scholarships will be geared towards you, which is why websites to help find scholarships are so important. When you put in information about yourself it will find scholarships that you should apply for.

If you need more information or have further questions, schedule an appointment with your guidance counselor to see what options are available.
