Last month, the Therapeutic Art Club began at Fitch, meeting every Thursday and welcoming new members interested in exploring new outlets to express and explore their feelings.
The Therapeutic Art Club, which meets in room 3127, supports students by allowing creative expression and encouraging them to explore their emotions and unique identities. There are many ideas of therapeutic art. Activities range from painting, drawing, collaging to make tactile objects such as slime, claiming bottles, putty, and more. For students looking for clubs to put on their college resume, you can put this club as an extracurricular activity, but it won’t count as volunteering or community service. This club is open to all students, even teachers, if they want to express their emotions in art.
“I usually come prepared with an activity in mind, but allow students to choose an alternate activity if the one I have provided does not speak to them,” said Mrs King, who started this club to offer a supportive environment for students to creatively explore and emotionally express themselves through hands-on art.
Each meeting, King provides options and gives students opportunities to choose what they want to do in the club. While she does come prepared with a specific activity, students are always free to choose a different activity if the specific one doesn’t interest them. This flexible approach allows the members to explore their creativity in a way that can be meaningful to them.
The students who have joined the club genuinely enjoy their time there, as they use art as a meaningful way to express their creativity with feelings and thoughts in a supportive environment.
