LEDYARD, Conn. – Last week, the Fitch boys’ tennis team traveled to Ledyard High School, where they secured their first victory of the season.
The boys started strong, winning all four of their singles matches. Charlie Gempp, a junior who played singles 1 during the match, beat his opponent 6-1, 6-3. In singles 2, Evan Whitten followed with a closer match, 6-4, 6-1, and Michael Petropoulos and Lawrence Balsley nearly earned bagels in their matches.
Off to an automatic win, being that all singles won, doubles 1 also got off to a strong start with Luc Nickerson and Jason Greene winning 7-5, 6-3. The doubles 2, however, weren’t in favor of the Falcons. Jeffery Hispsky and David Pan had to play a third set and eventually fell to the Colonels, 6-2, 2-6, 8-10.
In doubles 3, Mason McAlister and Gabe Georges played their debut match. Unfortunately, the pair continued the losing streak, 2-6, 1-6.
The team hosted a league game against Woodstock the day after, winning 6-1. The notable highlight was doubles 3, when Jeffery Hipsky and Max Romily fought off four match points in the third set to come from behind and win the super tie breaker 11-9, securing their first career wins.
The Falcons hosted Saint Bernard, combined with Wheeler High School, on April 25. The result was a sweeping 7-0 with half the team earning 6-0 and 6-0.
The team then continued its league season by competing at East Lyme. The highlight of the match was Evan Whitten winning his third set, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Senior Will Albrikes continued his undefeated streak with a 6-0, 6-0 match.
The most recent match, as of when this article was published, was home versus Killingly. All singles swept, and only one loss was suffered.
The Falcons will travel to Stonington on May 2. Having lost their previous match against the Bears 1-6, the team will hope to regain their form.
