NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Last Saturday, qualified Fitch indoor track team athletes traveled to the Floyd Little Athletic Center in preparation for the CIAC State Open.
The competition hosted many talented athletes from schools across Connecticut. Bethel High School, Bristol Central, Bunnel, Cheshire, Conard, Darien, Middletown, Torrington, and Simsbury were just some of the 68 teams that attended the meet.
The meet featured high energy across all events. The Fitch boys team fought hard with Evan Vitagliano placing seventh in the 600 meters, completing it in 1.23.25. The Fitch boys also placed in high jump, with Jacob Smith jumping 6 feet.
The Fitch girl’s team managed to place only once in 16th place for shot put, where Bethany Lovering scored 8.99 meters.
The meet concluded with the Lyman Hall boys winning their first state open since 1993 after finishing in second place last year. For the girls, Bloomfield High School took home the gold.
As for other meets, qualified Fitch athletes will be able to compete in the New England High School indoor track championships at Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Massachusetts on March 1. If any athletes qualify, they will compete in the New Balance Nationals from Thursday, March 13- Sunday, March 16.
