For my entire life, I have heard the debate about whether the movie “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie. My answer to that question is yes! Of course, it’s a Christmas movie, even though some people think there is too much violence, gore, and fight scenes. But it must be a Christmas movie!
The movie is literally on Christmas Eve, and it’s even at a Christmas party gone wrong. In the film, New York City police officer, Lt. John McLane (Bruce Willis) is separated from his wife Holly Gennaro McLane (Bonnie Bedelia). He wants to see her and his kids for Christmas and decides to go to the Christmas party at his wife’s workplace on Christmas Eve.
During the party, the guests are held captive by a terrorist group while McLane is away from the guests, and this ends up causing lots of violence and dire circumstances.
Because of the action plot, people may think this is not a Christmas movie but does that really determine whether or not it is? There are many movies that people consider Christmas movies even though they have violence in them such as “Krampus” or “Violent Night” (yes, I know these movies are not the best but still).
Christmas songs are played throughout the movie such as “Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”, “Winter Wonderland,” and “Christmas in Hollis.” There are also lots of Christmas quotes such as “If this is their idea of Christmas, I gotta be here for New Year’s,” “It’s Christmas, Theo, it’s the time of miracles, so be of good cheer!”, and “Now I have a machine gun, Ho ho ho!” There are many Christmas quotes but if I named them all it would take a long time. There are also lots of Christmas decorations throughout the movie, especially during the Christmas party scene.
So, “Die Hard” is obviously a Christmas movie. There is so much proof that it is. Even if a movie is an action movie that doesn’t mean it can’t be a Christmas movie.
