GROTON, Conn. – Just before Thanksgiving, more than half of Fitch’s student body attended the annual homecoming, enjoying a night full of dancing, friends, and photos.
The dance took place on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. inside of the Mike Ellis Sr. gymnasium. The gym was completely transformed into a fun atmosphere for all, encapsulating the feeling of the theme, “The Great Gatsby”. A DJ played songs that engaged the crowd of students. Mr. Russell, stationed at the entrance to the locker room, took
professional yearbook photos of students and their friends. A photo booth, run by Mrs. Scala, really tied the whole area together, as it was decorated on theme and had props for the students to use. They even got to take home Polaroids as a souvenir for their fun and eventful night.
Homecoming dances can be perceived sometimes as just a “boring” school event, but it seemed like a handful of people did end up having fun. There were some funny moments like the DJ playing “Fein”, a popular song by Travis Scott, or you’d look over and see somebody attempting to crowd surf. Overall, it was a really fun way to get out and see some school friends outside of educational hours.
“It was really fun,” said junior Regina Boutot. “I enjoyed getting to run the snack table and also getting to hang out with my friends.”
The class of 2026 ran the snack table all night long, with members of the student council working shifts, so students could dance and help out their class throughout the night. Some options on the table were a few different beverages to pick from and little snacks like candy or a slice of pizza.
“It wasn’t my favorite homecoming,” said junior and student council member Eesha Patel. “But I like seeing everyone dressed up and having a good time”
Homecoming this year brought a few changes to how the dance is run. Last year, the small gym was where the dancing was, and there were games in Mike Ellis Sr. gymnasium. This year, the small gym was used as a coat check, guarded by a
volunteer throughout the night, while the Mike Ellis Sr. gymnast was where the dancing was.
In addition to changes in the layout, there was also a change in time of year for this homecoming. Homecoming was one month and 24 days later than that of last year. A lot of questions within the student body were posed on why the dance was so late this year, none of which have been answered.
