GROTON, Conn. – Kicking off the Thanksgiving season, Fitch’s Black Student Union hosted its second annual canned food drive in November.
The drive ran from Nov. 1 to Nov. 22 and the three CTL’s with the most cans were announced on Nov. 26, with Dr. Rebecca Rabinsky-Akrom’s CTL coming in first place. First place was awarded goody bags, with second place receiving a ticket for a free snack in the snack line, and third place receiving a lollipop for every person in CTL. Students from each CTL would bring in canned goods which were collected weekly by BSU members. The top CTL also had the choice of choosing where the food would go to, with the options being Meals on Wheels, Groton Community Services, and Groton Humane Services.
“We are doing this drive and chose these certain charities because we know for a fact that they will put in the hard work and effort to put these donated cans to good use,” said club president, Mahi Patel. “We want to help the community that is not privileged enough to afford Thanksgiving food, and this drive would provide some sort of comforting food to the community.”
Last year’s drive totaled 470 cans that were donated to the Groton Food Locker. Following this year’s drive, BSU hinted at a winter clothes drive starting after winter break.
