Leading up to this year’s Winter Break, the members of the Falcon Press Staff will be sharing their favorite holiday films each of the 12 days leading up to the last day of school on Friday, Dec. 20. We hope you enjoy this feature, our thoughts on the movies listed, and the memories we associate with them!
Milo Chiapperini – “Klaus”
I first watched Klaus with my dad, scrolling through his Netflix page. It was a rainy day at the time, and my house was filled with the smell of freshly baked granola. This family-friendly film is probably the most original Christmas movie I’ve watched. The jokes hidden throughout the movie will delight younger audiences, while the twists and turns will keep older audiences engaged. The visual storytelling is compelling, with its unique animation and memorable characters.
Isabel Gustavson – “Miracle on 34th Street”
“Miracle On 34th Street,” the 1947 version, is not only a classic holiday movie but a favorite in my family. Every year since it was first shown to me when I was little on VHS we have watched it during winter break. I love it, particularly for its humor but also because it’s different from modern-day movies due to the period it was made in and the fact that it was filmed in black and white. The movie though is so much more than an old comedy. The storyline follows a man who works at Macy’s and claims to be the real Santa Claus. It takes you on an emotional roller coaster as it conveys the message of how important believing in others can be. Another deeper meaning found in the movie is that creativity and imagination can give you a happier life, especially as you grow older. As winter break approaches I look forward to experiencing the movie all over again a year older and with new perspectives.
