GROTON, Conn. – The elections for class officers changed significantly this school year, and now the results are in for the sophomore and junior classes.
In the past few years, students running for officer positions would have minor campaigns, with maybe a poster or social media post. Other students would cast their votes on a sheet of paper during CTL, and the winners would be announced over the intercom. This year, however, the junior class inspired a change to bring fairness to the process and get more students involved. In order to participate as a candidate in the election, students were given a checklist. Firstly, they had to get three signatures: one from a class advisor, and two from teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, etc. Next, They had to answer a series of questions including why they were running, why they felt suited for the position, and what they felt about the word dedication. Lastly, they had to turn in the aforementioned material, and then prepare and deliver a speech in front of their entire class. According to Matthew Brown, Fitch High School principal, this is the first time in over 10 years that students were required to give speeches during class elections.
The Class of 2026 delivered their speeches on Oct. 9 and the Class of 2027 on Oct. 10. After the candidates gave their speeches, juniors went back to their respective CTLs and cast their votes, and sophomores voted in the auditorium. The senior class did not hold a vote this year as the positions were uncontested.
