GROTON, Conn – Homecoming this year will be Nov. 23 and the pep rally will be held the following week, but some are left asking if this still counts as homecoming.
Since the start of school at the end of August, each class has been called to the auditorium to discuss the year ahead. Most of the information was about attendance and school counseling, but the piece of information that stuck out the most was the date of the pep rally and homecoming week. Homecoming has been held in September or October for the past two years, a month or two into the school year. Letting students kick off the school year with fun activities and class games. But this year, homecoming is pushed back to a non-traditional time.
The new set date for homecoming is Nov. 23rd, and the pep rally is Nov. 26th. The student body has been questioning the odd timing. “I’m not sure how that worked, but I know that we definitely didn’t pick the dates, ” senior Melanie Fleming says.
Homecoming is set to be run by the senior class of 2027. “We have a set theme, and we have a specific homecoming committee within the student council who are going to start meeting separately from the big meetings with Mrs. Coraizaca to work out the planning,” Fleming says. “The weird time has actually allotted us more time for careful consideration of all the details for homecoming.”
Though the homecoming date is late, the senior class council plans to keep the momentum and the student body engaged with beginning-of-the-year festivities, including Instagram polls, fundraisers, and spirit weeks.
