GROTON, Conn. – The Fitch Volleyball team defeated Killingly with wins from the Freshman team, JV team, and Varsity team.
Fitch High School’s recent game against Killingly was their first meeting of this school year. All three teams, Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity won their games, getting the Falcons a strong start to their season. The volleyball game was played at home in the Falcon Gym on Sept. 19. Both teams are in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Fitch’s volleyball team this year has a lot of key returning Varsity players. Pointing out the success of Varsity they were able to finish their game with a 3-0 score. The first set closed in with the closest score between teams. The Falcons took the first set by a few close points to finish out. The second set and third set was strong for the Falcons, finishing the third in the shortest set of the game.
“We support each other”, said Abby Malone, a member of the Varsity team. She said the team has been taking these steps to get a win across all three teams. “And cheer for the other teams” Their team is strong with communication skills and bonds well together.
A highlighting point in the game was Malone finishing a long point out by ending the point in 90 seconds of gameplay.
”Using a different position perimeter defense instead of man up”, said Sydney Weigle, a member of the Varsity team. She stated the team made these decisions to affect the direct outcome, “and [to utilize] smart offense by tooling the block”
The changes in strategy led to a dominating performance.
Fitch volleyball will go on to face other teams in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. To make a best effort in this game the Varsity’s goal moving forward is to switch up technique, using backrow attack to surprise the other team.
The Falcons went on to defeat Montville 3-0 on Oct. 2 in a conference home game.
