GROTON, Conn. – After a season of hard work, Fitch girls basketball entered the ECC playoffs as the fourth string, falling to New London High School in the semifinals.
The Fitch Girls basketball, head coached by Felicia Porter, has had a season full of hard work ending the regular season with an overall record of 11-9, and 5-3 in their ECC Division I league. With this record, Fitch entered the quarterfinals as the fourth string seed. The quarterfinal game against Woodstock Academy on Feb. 15 ended in a 46-36 win from Fitch, sending them into the semifinals on Saturday Feb. 16 against New London High School. The team went into the first round focused on winning and giving their best-pushing them into the second round. In a close game on Saturday, Feb. 16, Fitch fell to New London 50-41.
“All my mind was on was winning,” said senior co-captain Dre’ana Singleton. “We knew what we had to do to win, so it was just up to us to execute what we needed to.”
In the regular season – Fitch and New London went 1-1, Fitch beating New London in a 54-44 win at home, and falling to New London 58-45 away at New London High School. The players entered their next game focused on making it to the ECC finals at Mohegan Sun on Tuesday Feb. 20. In preparation for this game, the team held intense practices preparing them for all possible game scenarios.
Senior co-captain Gabby Dimock stated that the teams practices were, “focused and competitive, preparing for the match up against each other as well as focusing on the little things that are in our control like defense effort and boxing out.”
Though the team did not make it to the ECC finals, several players were awarded ECC awards during halftime of the final game.

The team continued to win their first round of the state tournament on Feb. 27 and will play their second round against Simsbury High School on Friday March 1.
