A Florida cop was recently sentenced to 97 years of prison for child neglect. Scot Peterson, former deputy, resigned right after the Parkland shooting and is now on trial for child negligence.

According to BBC, “Former Deputy Scot Peterson, 56, stood outside building 1200 on the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for 48 minutes as rifle shots rang out from within during the 14 February 2018 massacre.” While he was standing outside, he let 17 people get killed and 17 injured. Scot Peterson also told other deputies not to approach.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen said, “Former Deputy Peterson did absolutely nothing to mitigate the carnage that day. There can be no excuse for his complete inaction and no question that his inaction cost lives,” he said in a statement as the charges were filed.i Investigators say that he was the closest to the gun and did absolutely nothing to stop the gunman from shooting.

Parents of victims today are saying he should be put in jail for not reacting to the firing and at least should have tried to stop the shooter. Scot Peterson, “has been charged with seven counts of child neglect with great bodily harm, three counts of culpable negligence and exposure to harm, and one count of perjury. He is now facing up to 97 years in jail.” If Scot Peterson at least tried to stop the shooter he would have been able to save the kids on the third floor.

Fred Guttenberg, a parent of a victim of the Parkland shooting, spoke out and said, “He should rot, my daughter was one of the last to be shot. My daughter absolutely could have been saved by him and she wasn’t,” he said, adding: “Had she had one more second she would have been saved.” many parents are saying he could have saved many kids lives but failed to act.

Scot Peterson is on trial right now and has 97 years on his belt right now and maybe more.
